“…that one perfectly happy moment.”
We now interrupt our indeterminate hiatus to actually discuss a film: The Decelerators by Mark Slutsky. Lest anyone get too excited about my return to blogging, it’s a short film, a five-minute short film… but it’s fantastic.
Today, purely by chance I stumbled upon this film, and it was so good that I feel compelled to do what little is in my power to spread the word about it.
The film follows a group of young people, who, as we all do, observe that as time goes on it seems to accelerate, each day and year seeming to pass by faster than the one before. What makes these characters different is that they set out to do something about it. The film manages to take one of the better original science-fiction premises I’ve seen and explore it beautifully in just a few minutes.
The film is thought-provoking, but it’s also fun to look at, the cinematography is spot-on, as Slutsky cuts from one unique and brilliantly lit shot to another, as the story rapidly unfolds.
I have no doubt that at this moment there are producers lining up to adapt or rip-off this premise for a feature format. The premise and the plot are strong enough to do that, though it would all come down to the execution. For now, the bar has been set extremely high. It’s probably not fair to even consider calling a five-minute short “perfect”, but The Decelerators is without a doubt one of the best-executed films I’ve seen. Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to watch this movie; it’s a Must See.
